Weird and Wonderful Web Words
The Relevance of Web Relevance
The word relevant used to be a simple thing. "Pertinence to the matter at hand," says Webster's. But in the Internet world, the word becomes positively bloated with meaning. If you search for something on the Internet using Yahoo or Google, relevance is how closely the search results match the search words you entered. Search engines use all kinds of ways to rate the relevance of a page. Examples include the closeness of the words to each other and how often the words appear on a page. But, in the end, it's your own web page that has to be relevant to those who visit your site. Therefore you need the location, rates, availability, activities and other material front and centre and easy to read.
If it's relevant to a guest, it's relevant to a search engine.
